2019 > Conjuring Human Essense in Portrait Painting

Thinking about "presence" in the ritual of portraiture and where "essence" is located, explicitly concerning subjects who are not within my physical proximity.

I am asking myself questions around portraiture being as much about the exchange between the observer and the subject, as it is about the subject themselves, tapping into something that goes beyond a physical likeness.

I started constructing proxies for these subjects, using our exchanges and communications as a tool for abstraction, in an attempt to capture this essence and depict the complications of human connection.
